Shopify CFO Jeff Hoffmeister interviewed with Nasdaq this week. There wasn't a lot of newness in the conversation, but there were a few interesting notes.

Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), built in deep technical partnership with Alphabet, continues to fetch broad industry adoption. It enables products like Shopify Catalog to let merchants seamlessly plug complete, high-quality listings right into chatbot outputs and unlock new ways for Shopify to attract large merchants. That’s happening through a go-to-market offering called the “Agentic Plan.” What this does is allow merchants to use Shopify’s UCP infrastructure to plug products into ChatGPT and Claude without needing to be a Shopify merchant in the first place. This accomplishes two things: First, it allows Shopify to monetize volume it otherwise might not have gotten. And second, it gives them easy opportunities to cross-sell additional products and win more of the enterprise’s business.

In other news, Shopify Sidekick (its AI Assistant) is thriving and helping merchants practice more intelligent decision making and find more success. And while there’s growing concern over enterprise costs of offering these AI products, Shopify is finding ways to control expenses by dynamically using cheaper models for simpler queries and storing answers to common questions. This avoids constantly generating the same output over & over again. In terms of using AI internally, Shopify’s founder-led, engineering-focused culture has permeated throughout every department. One year ago, Tobi (founder) introduced an AI mandate for Shopify to embrace doing whatever they possibly could with this technology. That’s why 50% of its code is already written by AI and why the company expects to tightly limit headcount growth for the foreseeable future while the business rapidly compounds.

  • Recent tax headwinds will abate in the coming quarters and that FCF margin obstacle will go away.

  • Shop Pay continues to outperform competition in checkout conversion and sell very easily with merchants.

  • Product uptake internationally is following the same patterns as in North America, meaning more introductions should lead to more rapid growth across the globe.

  • The accelerated pace of change from the AI revolution is leading to a heightened sense of urgency for large enterprises to future-proof their technology stacks. That is turning into a tailwind for those customers migrating to Shopify's platform.
